November's Big 50,000-Word Challange

November is NANOWriMo month. While I’m not going to be writing a 50,000-word novel this month, I’m going to attempt a similar challenge.

Before the pandemic, I noodled about with various Greystone-based adventures and mini-adventures. (Greystone is a ruined village in the Ashlar campaign setting.) Here's a look at the place:

Cartography by Tommi Salama

Some I wrote up just for my gaming group, while others I released through Raging Swan Press. However, development was inconsistent, and not everything I wrote made it into a published book. In November, I’m going to pull together all the released and unreleased material into one master Greystone sandbox-style adventure--working title, Cursed Ruin of Greystone.

If I were doing NANOWriMo properly, I’d be writing 1,667 words every day. For this project, I’m going to output 1,667 (or more) laid out, developed and edited words every day. By the end of the month, I should have a 100-page or so sandbox adventure.

That won’t be the end of the matter, though. I’m sure I’ll come across “developmental opportunities” throughout the project, and I don’t have professional maps for most of the adventure. Still, those are problems for a later date. I suspect, however, that Tommi Salama will shortly be busier than he thought. (He’s currently finishing off the last map for Citadel on the Wilderlands—the map for the town of Bleakhaven.)

If all goes according to plan, Cursed Ruin of Greystone should come out sometime mid-late 2024.

So that's my plan for November. Are you doing NANOWriMo or a similar project? Let me know in the comments below.
