Creativity at 3 MPH

I’ve lost count of the creative breakthroughs I’ve had while out in nature away from my shiny devices.

The Guardian has published a tremendously interesting article about productivity, creativity and exercise. If you are a writer, publisher or artist, it is well worth reading.

‘All it takes is a quick walk’: how a few minutes’ exercise can unleash creativity – even if you hate it
Do you have your best ideas while running to the bus stop, or walking the dog? You’re not alone. Researchers are finding remarkable links between movement and blue-sky thinking

If the article interests you, I highly recommend The Extended Mind by Annie Murphy Paul. I’ve blogged about this book before:

Takeaways from the Extended Mind
I’ve just finished The Extended Mind by Annie Murphy Paul. As a work from home designer, writer and publisher I’m always keen to improve my working practices in the pursuit of greater productivity and a better work/life balance.

The book and the article explore how we can work better when we move more. I’ve been a keen runner and dog walker for well over a decade, and I’ve now added rucking to my exercise arsenal. I’ve lost count of the creative breakthroughs I’ve had while out in nature away from my shiny devices.

So, if you are struggling with a design problem, get outside and move. You won’t regret it. (And then try to claim your exercise gear as tax-deductible business expenses.)
