Hungry are the Young
Last weekend, I included this short drop-in encounter with Raging Swan Press's Sunday Supplement. I'd love to know what you think about the format. Is it useful? Would you like to see more of them? Let me know in the comments!
Hungry are the Young
The Past: Rister Mieho is having a terrible day. A few days ago, Rister found an old treasure map and determined to follow it. Gathering supplies, he hiked into the nearby wilderlands and made good progress until he stumbled upon a troll out hunting for prey. The troll, a horrible creature called Majel, had just given birth to triplets and was looking for fresh meat for them when Rister blundered into view.
The Now: Majel made short work of Rister and is now dragging him to her lair. Rister is not dead—Majel wants her children’s food to be as fresh as possible—but he is badly injured. At the start of the encounter, a perceptive character spots Majel dragging the near-unconscious Rister toward her lair. She is dragging him by his right ankle while he feebly tries to draw a dagger from his other boot.
The Future: If rescued, Rister is tremendously grateful and offers to share the proceeds of his treasure map with the characters. (But he needs help locating the treasure.)
The characters can follow Majel’s tracks back to her den—therein, they discover her three ravenous young and the remains of many other victims.
Rister Mieho (CG male human fighter 2 [Str 15, Dex 13, Con 14, Int 10, Wis 8, Cha 12]) dreams big and knows that an average, boring life is not for him; Appearance: tall and handsome in a rough, tousled way, Rister has flaxen hair and an impressive moustache; Personality: brave, optimistic and friendly; likes a drink and rarely gives much thought to consequences; Mannerisms: wipes his nose with the back of his hand; Background: son of a farmer bored with the mundanities of everyday life; Hook: offers to share the proceeds of his treasure map with the characters; Notable Gear: treasure map
